Mexican Food in London – Dinner at the Mexican Supper Club by Discovery Foods

Whilst Indian food might be the second national cuisine of England, the same could be said for Mexican food in America. Mexican, or even Tex-Mex  (an Americanized version of Mexican food incl Fajitas) can be found on most menus of “American” style restaurants. Salsa and guacamole are regular table condiments – and the heat from chiles are a customary addition to many a dish. When I lived in London 10 years ago – there was absolutely no Mexican food available. I couldn’t find restaurants and stores were empty of salsa, taco mix or even tortillas. This time around – 10…

Quick, kid friendly pantry red pesto pasta and garlic chicken – takes only 20 minutes!

I love to cook (and even more so love to eat!) but as a working Mom I often don’t have as much time as I’d like to have for planning and cooking meals. So, one of the tricks I’ve developed over time is to keep ready to use ingredients, so the prep-time of cooking is shortened, without a loss of flavor. I’ve found one of the easiest ways to be prepared for whipping together a quick dinner is to have ready to use herbs in a tube. They are handy – and you don’t have to worry about a big…

The disappointments of Christmas…

The boys have been excitedly making plans for Christmas.  They’ve made their wishlist’s and told Santa all about what they want for Christmas. It took explaining multiple times before “Captain Hook” and “Peter Pan” understood the list was more a guideline for Santa, the Elves and assorted family members to understand what they wanted, not a list of everything they’d for sure be receiving for Christmas. When I had suggested putting the list on the fridge – they insisted on taping it to the window facing out so Santa and the Elves could peek in at it. It’s been on…

My son asked, “Is Karma Real?”…

Last night my son, “Captain Hook,” came up to me to ask “Is Karma real?”  That’s a tricky question when trying to answer a 6 year old, and a lot comes down to personal belief and context. I told him, yes, I believe Karma is real – but not everyone does so. For example, your Father doesn’t believe in Karma, but I do believe it’s real. I believe that if you do good things, and your put good thoughts, deeds and actions out there – then it’s not instantaneous or measured 1 for 1, but good things do come back…

Boys and girls…Oh baby!

When we first learned we were expecting we waiting until after the first trimester to tell our boys. Upon hearing the news they were pretty excited and immediately wanted to feel the baby through my belly. (My SIL is a few months ahead of me pregnant so they already understand the concept of the baby in the belly) Of course they couldn’t feel anything at that point – but it did lead us to a discussion of whether they thought they’d have a new baby brother or sister. “Captain Hook” thought about it for a moment, and said “Well, we’ll…

The Hospital Packing list – so now you tell me!!

This being my third baby I pretty much thought I had the drill down by now. But having this 3rd baby in a different country than the previous 2 has really thrown me some curveballs. I’ve previously mentioned my surprise about the differences in maternity wards in the US and UK. I thought I’d figured out all of differences and either planned around them and or made peace with them. That is until yesterday….  Ok UK Mums, please humor my naivety for a moment – it’s not based on a feeling of entitlement, rather, in my experience of having babies to date –…

Would you sweeten the deal for fellow passengers when flying with babies?

So as we get closer and closer to my due date – we’ve already begun making plans for life with baby, as a family of 5, (wow that feels and sounds weird!) We’ve been looking at tickets to go back to the US next summer to visit family and introduce our new baby girl. It’s hard to believe the boys haven’t been back to the US in over 2 yrs. That’s about half of “Peter Pan’s” life he’s now spent in London. In any case – I’ve been looking at getting 4 seats and then a bassinet seat for “Tinker…

#MumsNight – How to be a Crafty Mum

One of the things I always thought I’d be when I’d be a Mom/Mum would be to be a Crafty Mum. I’d have crafty fun projects for my kids to do, all organized and ready for them to express their creativity – and we’d display it with pride around the house. The reality has turned out quite a bit differently. I don’t have some some wonderful storehouse of crafty doodahs, no tempera paints or supplies, I don’t have ideas on what to have the kids make, the time to organize or do it – or the energy to clean…

Winter warm-ups with Polarn O. Pyret

There’s a nip in the air and we’ve begun putting away the short sleeve shirts and breaking out the winter gear. I made the rookie parent mistake (yes I still do these) a couple weeks back of bringing my son “Peter Pan” (age 4) into the UGG store to sit with me whilst I tried on some boots. I left the store without boots – but he left his heart behind with a pair of black toddler UGGs. He then proceeded to ask me each time I opened my computer if I was ordering his boots, and every time we…

Keeping Green Kids – Tips for raising eco-aware kids

My children have been bringing home all kinds of recycling tips from school – but I’m not always convinced they’ve got the info 100% correctly. Last week I found a pile of trash on the side table, a used juice pouch, some cardboard and other items. When I went to throw them in the bin my son “Captain Hook” said “No, I’m recycling those.” I told him he wasn’t that they were trash and couldn’t be collected with the recycling. He said that he personally was going to recycle them into something useful, like a boat…. Hmm… OK not exactly… Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...
