a transatlantic mommy / mummy blog – my kids say "tomato" & "to-mah-to"

Does anyone else besides me get “Comment Anxiety”?

I read so many blogs with posts that make me laugh, cry, or think somewhat deep thoughts. When I read these posts I want to reach out – respond, publicly share how the post touched me or the communal experience – but I freeze. Hand frozen over the mouse – thoughts and possible comment worthy responses running through my head.. and keep thinking, and thinking until I kind of overthink it. What could I possibly write as a comment that isn’t lame? That doesn’t take away from the writing of the post – or point the direction to a memory…

Would you ever use a “Shut Up” Gun on your kids?

You know the feeling – you’re on your cell phone and have a terrible connection – where your own voice echoes back to you with a short delay – and it’s almost impossible to carry on the conversation without holding the phone away from your head and projecting your voice into it. Along the same lines there is a new (harmless) gun being developed by Japanese researchers which shoots sound waves in an effort to disrupt and silence people who are speaking loudly, inappropriately etc. The device doesn’t cause the person it’s being used on any physical harm — it simply messes…

Have boys? Read this now and prepare for your MIL pre-nup

So having boys seems to be different from having girls – we don’t bond over clothes, shoes or boys (generally) and can’t quite jive over the Disney Princess thing (um ok) or Justin Bieber (never!). But that being the case, Mothers and Sons do have a special bond – which as one Blogess, Jenny Isenman goes into detail over in the Huffington Post (if you have a boy you must read this!!!) For those of us Mums who are afraid of what will happen when our boys get married and move away – I’m sure you’ll be glad to have…

Keeping in touch while traveling

One of the hardest things while traveling for work is keeping in touch with the kids. You’d think in this day and age it would be easier than it is – but with timezones and tech it can often be a challenge. The hardest is when I’m on the West Coast in the US and trying to chat with the boys back in London – it’s almost a half-day away in terms of timezones, so there ‘s almost never a convenient time to connect between my meetings, their school and sleep schedule. When I do reach out – I prefer…

I have a sneaking suspicion my kids are better eaters than they let on…

So, when my oldest was first eating solids – he wouldn’t eat any meat or traditional American kid food like hot dogs, chicken nuggets etc. His favorites were lentils and brown rice with garam masala black bean burgers Ethiopian food anything with garlic It was often a struggle to get him to eat much when visiting relatives who also had kids as he definitely did not want to eat what they were having. When my second son came along – he would anything, as long as it was on my plate, not his. Now that they are old enough and…

Little Liars

So my younger son (4) is talented at so many things – including lying. He’s convincing, does it with a straight face and no giveaways like facial ticks or raised voice etc. Which, is worrying. He clearly lies because he believes he’ll get in trouble (rightly so) but even when it’s about small things – where we know he did it and is lying to our face, but the actual thing isn’t really a big deal and we’re just trying to get him to confess – he sticks with the lie. *Sigh* I read a great book a few years…
